Here are some beautiful photos that my students took. They learned how to dodge and burn, blur the backgrounds and add pops of colour to photos of objects and of portraits.

The best way to stay up to date with what is happening in our class is to check out the student blogs on the right hand side of this screen. However, I like to show off student work on this page as well- here is some of what the grade 12 students have been up to (below). The collage is called The Spirit of Endurance, the 3D pictures are awesome if you happen to have the red and green glasses, the bright broken homes are also 3D pieces based on a post-apocolyptic world (you need special glasses to see them in 3D though), you'll see some Spoof Ads too, and finally, a One World Flag. Enjoy!

Grade 11 3D Animals (ASM3M)

These animals were created with the 3D imaging program Sculptris. You can download this program free from the internet- you should try it out, it's really cool!

My Hidden Self (ASM3M)

In this assignment, the students created a piece on Photoshop that would show their hidden self, a part of themselves that perhaps only their family and friends see. It's a big leap to learn how to compose a picture in a dynamic way, and I see lots of successful pictures here.

Sorry about the time lapse in posting- it was a busy year and a glorious summer :) I'm starting to prepare new assignments for this upcoming semester and found some of my favourite grade 11 media arts summative assignments- the creation of artistic yearbook pages. The only real parameters were that they had to show a unified colour scheme, a unified theme, and use their lessons from througnout the year- ex. layering and movement.

For this assignment, students were asked to take the lyrics from their favourite band and combine a snippet of the text with their own photography. The final product was to tell a story that the viewer could dwell on, avoiding a direct link with the original words. What I love about art assignments is that even with the same instructions, every students produces something completely unique!

Some 3D Animals

This year I've decided to switch to a simpler 3D image program called Sculptris (free from the internet). It starts out like a ball of clay that you manipulate into a shape, which is great because I consider our program an ART class before a computer class. Here are a few of the best examples of Sculptris animals that the grade 11 students created. 3D inventions will be added soon.

I have been slow at posting new work because the students have been keeping me busy with their assignments.
For this assignment, our grade 11 media arts students were asked to combine the lyrics from their favourite band with a photograph that they took. The challenges were to manipulate both the photos and lyrics in an artistic, subtle way. If you would like to see more examples, check out each student's blog.

ASM3O/Grade 11 Media Arts Culture Jammers

Our grade 12 students were asked to choose a company of their choice and show a critique of that company's policies, work practices, morals, etc. These critiques are often referred to as "Culture Jammers" as found in magazines such as AdBusters. Coming up with and completing this assignment was harder than it looked! However, the students have started to develop the necessary critical thinking skills needed for college and university.

Environmental Entropy

For this assignment, students were asked to create a proposal for a sculpture that would show the breakdown of an environment. Some of the images immediately hit an emotional chord, while others challenge us to quietly reflect on their meaning.

My Alter Ego

The first grade 12 Media Arts assignment has been for students to create a self portrait based on the idea of their alter ego. Students described both in words and visually what their "other self" would be like.
The grade 11 students are working on their classical animations, bringing inanimate objects to life in a short film. Keep posted for more.
